只要稍微關注世界，不難每天從新聞看到世界各地的苦難接踵而至：戰爭、歧視、飢餓、疫症 。苦難張狂的地步甚至令人不知該如何面對上主，不知該怎樣禱告、不知有可何作。

面對苦難，上帝卻似沒有回應，不禁讓人憤怒和絕望。然而，上帝是否真的毫不在乎或沒有伸手嗎？其中一個觀點認為，其實上主已差遣祂的子民進入到世界的苦痛之中，正如耶穌如何被父上帝所差遣，與世間同憂同悲。

正如楊腓力的觀察：「我們——你和我——是上帝回應這世界無數苦難的其中一部分。我們作為基督在地上的身體，被強制走向那些受傷者，正如基督一樣。那是上帝在所有歷史中的一貫行動。」（楊腓力：《有話問蒼天》）

一位猶太拉比Jack Riemer的禱文，也分享了相若的觀點。當遇見苦難之時，與其單單祈求上主把其挪去，更好的禱告或許是祈求上主賜我們有正確的智慧、能力、決心和行動力去進入到苦難的當中。拒絕被動或消極的宗教行為，轉而藉著上主所賜的力量改變世界。

當我們不知該怎樣為世間的苦痛祈禱時，不妨參考一下Jack Riemer在Likrat Shabbat中的禱告：

我們不能只僅僅向祢禱告：
噢，上帝啊！求祢結束戰爭；
因為我們知道祢創造世界的方式，
是要人類自己找到步向和平之路，
在自己內在與鄰舍之間。

We cannot merely pray to You,
O God, to end war:
For we know You made the world in a way
That we must find our own path of peace
Within ourselves and with our neighbor.

我們不能只僅僅禱告：
噢，上帝啊！求祢結束飢荒；
因為祢已經賦予我們資源
能以餵養整個世界的所需，
只要我們明智地運用它們。

We cannot merely pray to You,
O God, to root out prejudice:
For You have already given us eyes
